## Managed Meraki Security: Firewall and Threat Protection

 Dec 17, 2025

A Meraki MX has a capable firewall built in. But a firewall only protects you as well as its rules, licences and alerts are looked after, and that's the part that slips when the IT team is busy. In this blog, we'll cover the security side of our Meraki Security and SD-WAN managed service: firewall management, security triage, threat protection and what each tier adds.

![Managed Meraki Security: next-generation firewall, content filtering and threat protection on Meraki MX](https://blog.iptel.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/Blogs/Managed%20Meraki%20Security/managed-meraki-security-hero.png?width=1792&height=960&name=managed-meraki-security-hero.png)

## Meraki Security: What Does the Service Protect?

[![Managed Meraki SD-WAN: What the Service Covers](https://blog.iptel.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/Blogs/Managed%20Meraki%20SD-WAN/managed-meraki-sd-wan-square.png?width=173&height=173&name=managed-meraki-sd-wan-square.png)](https://blog.iptel.com.au/managed-services-meraki-sd-wan)Our Meraki Security and SD-WAN service manages the security features on your Cisco Meraki MX and vMX appliances: next-generation firewall, threat protection, content filtering and remote access. It's one of nine domains in our [managed services](https://iptel.com.au/managed-services). Because security and SD-WAN run on the same appliance, we manage them together.

The technology in scope is the Meraki MX security appliance with SD-WAN and the Meraki vMX virtual appliance, licensed with Meraki Advanced Security and SD-WAN Plus. The licence matters, because the advanced threat features depend on it, so keeping it current is part of the job.

This post covers the security half of the [Meraki Security and SD-WAN service](https://iptel.com.au/managed-services/meraki-sd-wan). For AutoVPN, path control and hybrid WAN, see [Managed Meraki SD-WAN: What the Service Covers](https://blog.iptel.com.au/managed-services-meraki-sd-wan).

## Firewall Management: How Do We Keep the Rule Base Clean?

We manage the MX firewall as a living policy, not a one-off build. That means maintaining rules as your sites and applications change, retaining event logs, and running service dashboards and reports on attacks, alerts, traffic and VPN tunnels. Those reports sit in the customer portal, so you see what we see.

Firewalls rarely fail through one bad rule. They drift. A temporary rule for a vendor stays for years, two rules overlap, and nobody is quite sure what a change will affect. Regular review stops that drift becoming an exposure.

Changes follow our [change management process](https://blog.iptel.com.au/managed-services-change-management), with planned changes and maintenance windows visible in the portal. The service is co-managed, so your team keeps full administrative access and can see every change we make.

**Pro-Tip:** Give every firewall rule a comment naming its owner and the reason it exists. At each service review, list the rules nobody can explain and remove them in a planned change. It's one of the cheapest security improvements a network can get.

## Security Triage: What Happens When the MX Raises an Event?

[![Incident Management in Managed Services: How It Works](https://blog.iptel.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/Blogs/Managed%20Services%20Incident%20Management/incident-management-square.png?width=173&height=173&name=incident-management-square.png)](https://blog.iptel.com.au/managed-services-incident-management)Meraki security events are raised in our service desk, where our engineers triage them and remediate whatever needs action. We use the Meraki API to bring those events in alongside the rest of your service, so a blocked intrusion attempt or a malware detection becomes a tracked ticket rather than a log line nobody reads.

Triage is where experience counts. Most events are the firewall doing its job and need nothing more than a record. A few point to something real, such as an infected device calling out or a rule letting in traffic it shouldn't. Telling the two apart quickly is the service.

Security incident triage and response is part of the Advanced tier, which also brings extended business hours and security-aware operations. For how incidents are prioritised, communicated and closed out, see [Incident Management in Managed Services: How It Works](https://blog.iptel.com.au/managed-services-incident-management).

## Threat Protection: Layer 7, Filtering and IDS/IPS

Threat protection is the set of MX features that look inside traffic rather than only at addresses and ports. It covers the Layer 7 firewall, content filtering, intrusion detection and prevention (IDS/IPS) and malware protection, plus VPN connections to AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. We configure, tune and monitor each of them.

### Layer 7 Firewall

Rules based on the application rather than the port, so you can allow a business application while blocking peer-to-peer file sharing, even when both use common web ports.

### Content Filtering

Category-based web filtering that reflects your acceptable use policy. Our job is keeping categories, allow lists and block lists in step with how your business actually works.

### IDS/IPS and Malware Protection

Detection and blocking of known attacks and malicious files. Tuning matters: too strict and legitimate traffic breaks, too loose and the alerts lose their meaning.

These protections sit at your sites. For people working away from the office, our [Security Service Edge service](https://iptel.com.au/managed-services/security-service-edge) carries the same policy thinking into the cloud with Cisco Umbrella, Cisco Secure Access and Cisco Secure Connect.

## Security Tiers: How Does Protection Build Up?

[![Cisco Powered Managed Services: What It Means for You](https://blog.iptel.com.au/hs-fs/hubfs/Blogs/Cisco%20Powered%20Managed%20Services/cisco-powered-managed-services-square.png?width=173&height=173&name=cisco-powered-managed-services-square.png)](https://blog.iptel.com.au/cisco-powered-managed-services)Each tier includes everything in the one before it. Essential manages the firewall, VPNs and event logs in business hours. Advanced adds security incident triage and response over extended hours. Critical adds the full threat protection stack, including Layer 7 firewall as a service, content filtering and advanced threat protection, with 24x7 incident response.

### Essential

Next-generation firewall management, base SD-WAN and AutoVPN, site-to-site VPNs, event log retention and a service dashboard.

### Advanced

Security incident triage and response, orchestration at scale, intelligent path control, hybrid WAN and SD-WAN analytics, with monthly reporting and a shared Customer Success Manager.

### Critical

Layer 7 firewall as a service, content filtering, VPN as a service, advanced threat protection and application visibility, with 24x7x365 cover and a named Level 3 engineer.

Behind every tier is an audited process. We're an audited [Cisco Powered Managed Services](https://blog.iptel.com.au/cisco-powered-managed-services) provider, Cisco independently audits our tools, processes, engineering practice and customer outcomes every year, and we're ISO 27001 accredited.

## Managed Meraki Security: FAQs

### What Is Managed Meraki Security?

It's the security side of IPTel's Meraki Security and SD-WAN managed service. We manage the next-generation firewall, security triage, threat protection and content filtering on your Meraki MX and vMX appliances, while your team keeps full administrative access.

### Which Tier Includes Content Filtering?

Content filtering, Layer 7 firewall as a service and advanced threat protection are added in the Critical tier. Essential covers firewall management, VPNs and event logs, and Advanced adds security incident triage and response.

### Who Responds When the MX Raises a Security Event?

From the Advanced tier, our engineers triage Meraki security events raised in our service desk and remediate what needs action. You can follow the ticket and its outcome in the customer portal.

### Does Managed Meraki Security Cover Remote Workers?

The MX protects traffic at your sites and covers remote access. For users off the corporate network, our Security Service Edge service manages Cisco Umbrella, Secure Access and Secure Connect, and both can sit in one agreement.

---

## Managed Meraki Security: Summary

A Meraki MX is only as secure as the way it's run. Our managed service keeps the rule base clean, turns security events into triaged tickets and tunes threat protection to your business, with tiers that add protection as your risk grows and full visibility for your own team throughout.
